It is my pleasure and honor to serve as principal of White Knoll Middle School.  Whenever I have the chance, I tell folks about our great students, parents, and staff.  The WKMS staff is dedicated to helping each student achieve their goals, our parents and community are supportive and committed to excellence, and our students are focused and eager to learn and lead.  This is a SUPER place to learn and to work.

Over the past two years we have made it our goal to “SOAR TO SUCCESS.”  Together we worked to better utilize our resources, as we became a blended learning site.  Our teachers worked to incorporate some great new online resources, along with excellent instruction and collaborative student work.  Our students honed their skills using ALEKS math and Achieve 3000 ELA resources.  We also worked together to set goals and keep up with our school data and personal achievements. As we look toward the upcoming school year, our school-wide priorities will remain:

  • Providing excellent and engaging instruction in all classes with a focus on blended learning.
  • Continuing to improve school climate with a focus on relationships, respect, and responsibility.
  • Striving for continuous improvement in all we do.

Our arts and athletics programs also continued to grow and be successful.  Approximately three fourths of our students participate in our fine arts programs and about 20% of our students participate in interscholastic athletics.  Our arts department recently was awarded a three-year grant and named an “Arts in Basic Curriculum” site.  This will allow us to continue to improve the arts at WKMS.  These are exciting times to be an educator or a student, and White Knoll Middle School is a great place to be.

On a personal note, I am happy to say that my wife Pam (a retired educator and the best teacher I know) and I have three adult children and 10 grandchildren.  I am fortunate to live only five miles from WKMS.  Prior to this opportunity I served as a social studies teacher at Richland Northeast High School and Pelion High School, and as an assistant principal at Pelion Elementary School and Pelion Middle School.  I am certified as a social studies teacher and as a principal.

If I can assist you in any way or answer any questions, please let me know.  You can reach me by phone at 821-4301 or 309-3118.  My e-mail address is Gasmith@lexington1.net.  You are also welcome to come by and visit at any time.

As I begin my 9th year at WKMS, I am just as excited as I was the first day I arrived here. My greatest responsibility is to help students make a purposeful transition from elementary to high school. I believe that middle school is dress rehearsal for the rest of students’ lives.

Before coming to WKMS, I was an assistant principal  in Aiken County. I worked as a special education teacher at a maximum security prison prior to working in Aiken County. I also worked as the Single Parent Coordinator at a Technical College for five years.

If I can assist you in any way,

Excited to be a War Hawk!
